Sheriff David P. Bartlett was elected Columbia County Sheriff in November 2013. Prior to becoming Sheriff, David served as Captain of the Sheriff's Office, managing the Communications, Patrol, and Criminal Investigation sections. He began his law enforcement career with the Town of Germantown Police Department as a Patrolman part time.  In 1984, he was appointed as a Deputy Sheriff Jailer, which at that time was the entry level position within the Office.  Sheriff Bartlett has held the positions of patrol Deputy Sheriff, patrol Sergeant, Criminal Investigator and Captain.
  

Sheriff Bartlett earned an Associate’s Degree from the University of New York in Cobleskill and has received training in corrections and law enforcement. He is certified as a Police Instructor in general topics with specialties in Firearms and Chemical Agents. He has instructed in in-service training and at the Zone 14 Law Enforcement Academy.  He has received training in the areas of Police Supervision, Incident Command, Accident Investigation and Counter Terrorism.  In May of 1995, Captain Bartlett attended the John Jay College of criminal justice in New York City for Advanced Narcotics Training.  David is certified by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in Boating Skills and Seamanship and attends Coast Guard F.I.S.T. Committee meetings.

Sheriff Bartlett served on the original Drug Entry Emergency Response Team working his way up to assistant team leader. He has served on the Sheriff’s Marine Patrol and with the Columbia County Drug Task Force.  Working with two different dogs as partners, he was a police K-9 handler from 1993 through 2003 and is certified as a K-9 Examiner.  Sheriff Bartlett and his partners, K-9’s Asko and Akim, were trained in the fields of narcotics detection, criminal apprehension and tracking. 
 
In addition to various certificates of appreciation, Sheriff Bartlett has received numerous service awards including an award from the Insurance Women of the Hudson Valley for his part in disarming an armed suicidal individual and an award from the New York State Sheriff’s Association for pulling an individual from a burning vehicle.
 
David is a member of the Palmer Engine and Hose (Kinderhook) Fire Company and currently serves as 1st Assistant Chief of the department. 
 
Sheriff Bartlett has participated with Sports and Therapeutic Recreation Instruction/Developmental Education (S.T.R.I.D.E.) and resides in Kinderhook with his wife Lori and their children. 
 
He is also Baseball Coach for the Northern Columbia Little League, and Soccer Coach for the Town of Kinderhook. 
 
David and his family are members of the St. John the Baptist Church in Valatie
