As a concerned resident of Columbia County, I am writing this letter to dispute an upcoming elected position. Chief Peter Volkmann is attempting to gain the top position of the Columbia County Sheriff’s office. I ask myself — is he really qualified for this position? Is he really the right person? All one hears about in his campaign is the Chatham Cares 4 U program. This is an important topic, but there are many other aspects that need attention as the Sheriff of Columbia County. There are five divisions in the Sheriff’s Office: Law enforcement, Corrections, Emergency Management, Civil Enforcement and Security Services. These branches require expertise to have a department and county run smoothly. I don’t believe that Chief Volkmann is capable of effectively managing all that is required. Sheriff David Bartlett is a highly trained official that has held every rank in office except for Lieutenant and Undersheriff. He is the most qualified and best fit for the role of Columbia County Sheriff.
